62 Day Bible Reading Challenge

Dear Church Family,

                This Reading plan will focus upon two of Jerusalem’s Major Prophets;

Isaiah – who’s prophetic activity (740-687 BC) focused upon Israel’s destiny of both judgment for their dependence upon other nations and their lack of trust in YHWH and their subsequent destiny of salvation through YHWH’s Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53).

Jeremiah – known as the “Weeping Prophet,” who’s prophetic activity (627-585 BC) laments the judgment of Judah due to their unfaithfulness to YHWH before their subsequent fall into captivity to Babylon. Though they will fall into captivity YHWH will restore them. The Book of Lamentations, accredited to Jeremiah, are 5 laments over the fall of Jerusalem, focusing on the justice of YHWH and the hope that finally lies within YHWH’s character and love.

A Moment in Biblical Literacy: The Gospel

If you were asked to explain the "Gospel" and locate it in the Bible could you?

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,  2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.  3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,  4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

The Gospel is the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross to save me from my sins and to save you from yours. He was buried and three days later He was raised from the dead. All according to the promises of God found in the Bible and all to make our Salvation possible (Psalm 16, Psalm 22and Isaiah 53).

What is the Gospel?
1)      Jesus’ Death for our sin
2)      Jesus’ Burial
3)      Jesus’ Resurrection

·         Jesus said the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the Gospel (Mark 1:15).
·         The Bible says in Romans 10:9, confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised Him from the Dead and you will be saved.

Do you believe?

A Moment in Biblical Literacy: The Great Commandment

If you were asked to explain and locate in the Bible God's "Great Commandment," could you?

Matthew 22:36-40

36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"
37 And [Jesus] said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
38 "This is the great and foremost commandment.
39 "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'
40 "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

Jesus took the 10 Commandment of Exodus 20, "have no other gods before Me, do not lie, steal, or murder, etc." and summed them up.

Commandments 1-4 summed up -
Love God with every fiber of your being

Commandments 5-10 summed up --
Love people just like you already love yourself

Everything God has spoken to us through the Old Testament (Genesis to Malachi) has at its core and call this "Great Commandment."

42 Day Reading Challenge

Dear Church Family,

This Reading Challenge will incorporate the Poetry of the Song of Solomon, celebrating the proper relationship of love between one man and one woman.

It will continue the historical events as recorded in Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther following the completion of the 70 year captivity of the Southern Kingdom of Israel into Babylon. The fulfillment of God’s promise to return His people to their homeland and the struggles they faced.

And finally, the wisdom literature of Job, the historical account of a man’s suffering.  It grapples with the proper view of suffering among the people of God and where true wisdom is found.
